The hardest part of getting into venture capital isn't having good judgment. Plenty of people have that.
The hard part is access.
Venture firms are small. A fund managing hundreds of millions of dollars might have eight people on its investment team, and those seats may only open up every few years. So the standard advice for anyone who wants to break into venture is to wait.
Wait for an opening.
Wait for an introduction.
Wait until you have the kind of résumé that gets you in the room.
Meanwhile, those same people are already doing the actual work.
They're the ones their friends call before a launch. They know the founder in their coworking space who is about to raise. They see the product on campus a year before it shows up in an investor's inbox.
That's dealflow.
And most of it never reaches an investor.
That gap is what the LvlUp VC in Residence (VCR) program exists to close.
The VC in Residence program is a global community of entrepreneurs, investors, and operators focused on supporting, educating, investing in, and accelerating startups.
It's a way to break into venture, gain real experience, build a portfolio, get recognized for the calls you make, and have a tangible impact on the companies you back.
It isn't a course.
There is no curriculum to complete and no certificate waiting at the end. Instead, you bring companies you believe in, LvlUp handles the diligence and funding process, and when we invest in a company you brought to us, you share in that investment.
In other words, you don't have to wait for a venture firm to give you a job to start doing venture work.
The VCR program has three tiers, each designed for a different type of network and level of involvement.
Venture Scouts are the core of the program.
Scouts source companies from their own networks, cities, industries, and communities. If you spend your working life around founders, you're probably already doing some version of this informally.
The VCR program gives you a way to do it deliberately — and get credited for it.
Dealflow Partners bring companies to LvlUp at volume and work alongside our funding partners.
This tier is particularly suited to accelerators, angel groups, communities, and operators who consistently have startups moving through their networks rather than encountering the occasional standout company.
University Ambassadors represent LvlUp on their campuses and help identify promising founders early.
Universities are where a significant share of the next generation of companies are being built — often by students working from a dorm room with no investor within a hundred miles.
Ambassadors help find those founders early and connect them directly to the LvlUp ecosystem.
Different commitments. Different networks. Same underlying opportunity:
Find great companies before everyone else does.
The process is simple.
Someone in your network is raising — or should be.
You send them our way.
Every referral appears in your VCR Dashboard, where you can follow its funding status as it moves through the process.
You're not left wondering what happened to the founder you introduced.
If LvlUp funds a company you brought to us, you earn cash or equity on that deal.
And equity matters.
Because over time, the portfolio you build becomes a real track record — with real positions in companies that have the potential to grow — rather than a spreadsheet of companies you once mentioned to an investor.
That's how you start building an investing track record without raising a fund of your own first.
We're honest about the fact that this isn't charity.
It works because it works for both sides.
Good companies aren't evenly distributed, and they're certainly not evenly discovered.
The best companies are frequently found by someone standing much closer to them than we are.
That's why LvlUp has built a network of 4,000+ venture scouts across North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
These scouts hear about companies from people who live in the same market, work in the same industry, and sometimes knew the founder before the deck even existed.
Our VCRs source for LvlUp and our funding partners, while those partners multiply the number of companies the network can ultimately help fund.
A scout isn't pitching into one fund with one thesis and one check size.
They're bringing a company into a system with multiple doors.
The result is a broader top of funnel than any internal investment team could build on its own — and a path into venture for people who may never have had access to the traditional one.
You may be a strong fit if:
And you do not need prior investing experience.
You don't need a fund.
You don't need capital of your own.
You need a network and the judgment to know which companies in that network are worth our attention.
We've updated the program and made the application process more accessible.
Venture Scouts and University Ambassadors can now apply directly.
No waiting for an introduction to get into a program whose entire purpose is to make venture more accessible.
