Building the Mentor Alliance: Why CPG Labs Needs Buyers in the Room

Most of the advice a CPG founder gets in their first few years comes from other founders, or from investors who've never actually sat across the table during a buyer negotiation. It's well-intentioned, and it's often wrong in the specific ways that matter most.

The founders in our CPG Labs cohort aren't struggling because they lack conviction about their product. They're struggling with the parts of the business that don't show up in a pitch deck: how to actually get onto a shelf, how to read a category review, how to build a relationship with a buyer that survives past the first order. That knowledge doesn't live in most accelerator curricula. It lives with the people who've spent their careers on the other side of the table.

That's why we're expanding our Mentor Alliance.

What We're Building

The Mentor Alliance is a network of retail buyers, senior buyers, and category managers who work directly with founders in our CPG Labs cohort. It's not a panel or a webinar series. It's real, ongoing access.

Here's how it works. Mentors join the network and commit to office hours throughout the fall, one-on-one calls with founders working through the exact problems these mentors solve every day. Shelf placement strategy. Buyer relationships. Category dynamics. Pricing and promo structures that actually move volume instead of just moving margin. The stuff that decides whether a brand scales past its first few accounts or stalls out there.

Founders get direct time with someone who has actually sat on the other side of a buyer meeting. Mentors get a front-row seat to the next wave of CPG brands before the rest of the market notices them.

Why This Matters More in CPG Than Almost Anywhere Else

Consumer software founders can often learn distribution by reading, testing, and iterating quickly online. CPG founders don't have that luxury. Shelf space is finite, category reviews happen on fixed cycles, and a single bad first impression with a buyer can close a door for a long time. The margin for error is smaller, and the cost of learning by trial and error is higher.

That's exactly why direct access to people who've made the buying decisions matters so much here. A founder can read every article written about category management and still walk into their first buyer meeting unprepared for what actually happens in the room. A mentor who's been the buyer in that room can close that gap in a single call.

What Mentors Get

This isn't a one-way ask. Mentors in the Alliance get real value back:

First access to CPG Labs brands before they're broadly known in the market, at the point when relationships are easiest to build.

A seat at our monthly mentor calls, where top executives and operators across the CPG ecosystem show up to trade notes on what they're seeing in the category.

Quarterly invitations to curated LvlUp events, built specifically around the CPG ecosystem.

A private Slack channel where mentors and founders are having real, ongoing conversations, not one-off calls that end when the meeting does.

You're not just advising founders. You're building relationships with the other executives and operators in the Alliance, the kind of network that tends to matter more the longer you're in this industry.

Who We're Looking For

We're looking for retail buyers, senior buyers, and category managers who have real, specific opinions about what makes a brand win on shelf and hold on once it's there. Not theory. Not a general interest in mentorship. Actual scar tissue from category reviews, actual instincts about which brands are built to last past their first big order.

If that's you, we want to talk.
